The department includes a BSW (Bachelor of Social Work) program and a MSW (Master of Social Work) program. The MSW program of social work started in 1998. The BSW program of social work started in 2000. Graduates from the programs pass the licensure exam at a rate that surpasses the national averages. The programs are very popular with employers. In the past five years, every graduate has either gotten a job or been accepted into graduate school. There are more than 50 internship agencies affiliated with the programs.

The department’s full-time faculty are doctorally prepared social work educators and researchers who assign equal importance to teaching and scholarly work. The faculty’s areas of expertise cover direct and indirect social work. Their specialties are diverse, including: children, youth, elderly, women, disabled, family, community, social assistance, and counseling psychology.

The department upholds the motto of Tzu Chi University. The BSW program aims to nurture students to be professional social workers with compassion to save the world. The MSW program aims to nurture students to be professional social workers with the ability of rendering assistance, conducting research, and performing supervisory functions. With the support of Buddhist Companion Relief TCBC Foundation, the department offers students opportunities to earn extra academic credits through service learning.

BSW program BSW program
Students must complete a minimum of 128 academic credits to receive a BSW degree. The minimum of 128 credits required for graduation must include 28 credits in General Education, 67 credits of departmental compulsory courses, and at least 20 credits of departmental elective courses. The departmental compulsory courses include the following: Introduction to social work (Ⅰ) and (Ⅱ), Introduction to Law, Sociology (Ⅰ) and (Ⅱ), Psychology (Ⅰ) and (Ⅱ), Career Planning, Statistics in Social Research (Ⅰ) and (Ⅱ), Group Dynamics, Interviewing Skills, Social Case Work (Ⅰ) and (Ⅱ), Social Psychology, Social Group Work (Ⅰ) and (Ⅱ), Introduction to Social Welfare, Social Work Research Methods (Ⅰ) and (Ⅱ), Human Behavior & Social Environment, Community Work (Ⅰ) and (Ⅱ), Social Welfare and Administration, Program Design and Evaluation, Introduction to Social Work Practicum (Ⅰ) and (Ⅱ), Social Work Management, Social Policy and Law, Social Work Practice (Ⅰ) and (Ⅱ), and Ethics and Values in Social Work .
MSW program MSW program
Students must complete a minimum of 30 academic credits to receive a MSW degree. The minimum of 30 credits required for graduation must include 11 credits of compulsory courses, 2 credits of required elective courses, and 20 credits of elective courses. At least 2/3 of the 20 credits of elective courses must be credits of departmental elective courses. The compulsory and required elective courses include the following: Social Work Theory and Practice, Social Work Practice (Ⅰ) and (Ⅱ), Seminar (Ⅰ) and (Ⅱ), and Social work research methods (Ⅰ).

Interactive Teaching
Faculty members of the department emphasize interactive teaching. This form of teaching aims to encourage students to think and express opinions andproduces students who can think independently and put learning into practice. The department frequently invites social work scholars and practitioners to share their research and practical experience. The sharing activities are to help students combine theory with practice.
Field Education
Field education is an integral component of our social work curriculum, engaging students in supervised social work practice and providing opportunities to apply classroom learning in the field setting. All field education courses are graded. The primary goals of field education are to help students develop professional identities and to develop students’ ability to work within human service agencies or organizations.
Close ties with service organizations
The department has a close tie with Buddhist Companion Relief TCBC Foundation. The foundation provides scholarship and internship opportunities for students and job opportunities for graduates of the department. It also has close ties with local authorities and the third sector, thus facilitating students to interact with local social work providers.

Career Opportunities and Prospects

Many of our graduates are working in non-profit agencies or government agencies. Our graduates have excellent job prospects in areas such as mental health, child welfare, family work, adult and juvenile justice, school or medical social work, domestic violence services, and community organizing/development. For the past five years, most of our graduates have either been hired in a social work position or been accepted to the graduate school of their choice.
